7th October 2006: Waunarlwydd V Carmarthen Quins

Played: Home
Result: Lost, 15 - 31

Report

After conceding a sloppy early try, Waun settled down and produced arguably the best performance of the season. Waun looked composed and in control for most of the game and competed exceptionally well, winning more than their fair share of possession. After the early setback fly half Lee Jones struck a good touch finder to land Waun a few metres from the Quins try line. A good take in the middle of the line out allowed Waun to show their dominance up front and drove the Quins pack over for a try in the corner, which once converted put Waun into a marginal lead. The lead however was short lived with 2 penalties from the Quins and 1 from Waun making the score 11-10 at half time. This could have been different as Waun opted not to kick for goal twice within the closing minutes of the half and went for the lineout instead.

Half-Time: Waunarlwydd 10 - 11 Carmarthen Quins

Waun conceded an early try again in this half to go 18-10 down. A penalty shortly later pushed the Quins 21-10 ahead. Waun again gained good territory and scored from another powerful drive from the pack to claw back to 21-17. Waun took the game forward from here and unfortunately ended a lengthy period of pressure on the Quins try line with no points to show for it. Carmarthen replied with a penalty to go 24-17 up and at this point Waun seemed to lose all composure. Several mistakes in the final ten minutes put Waun under severe pressure. Eventually Carmarthen broke away to score a try under the posts and kill the game off. The final score definitely flattered the visitors, but a lot of the pressure could have been avoided if we had stayed composed and not panicked. Back to back trips to Merthyr it is for us then.

Full-Time: Waunarlwydd 17 - 31 Carmarthen Quins
