Report

Waun travelled to Merthyr for the first match of 2008.Our opponents were four points ahead in the league table and this was the first of three matches in January against clubs in the relegation zone. However Waun were missing several key players which included Jonny Lewis-on the bench for Swansea, Michael Harris,Stuat Fletcher and Daniel Joseph.

The home side took the lead after ten minutes with a penalty.Waun started to win some possession and nearly scored a try following a drive off a line out.Simon Daniel then levelled the scores with a penalty after David Norman was tripped. However Merthyr scored the first try of the match on the half hour when their winger scored a try after an excellent move following a scrum on half way.The try was converted and Merthyr went ten points ahead with another penalty after a line out was lost.Waun were now struggling to compete but some pressure was relieved following an interception by Simon Evans who ran well before being caught on the Merthyr ten yard line.

The second half continued as the first half had ended with Merthyr in total control and Waun conceding penalties on a regular basis. The referee finally lost patience after fifteen miutes and hooker Steffan Jones was given a yellow card. While he was off the field,Merthyr scored a third try to add to a try scored five minutes into the second half.Merthyr scored a fourth try with ten minutes to go to secure a bonus point. The match ended with Merthyr losing a player to a yellow card, and Waun got a late try by Simon Crane after a forward drive to the line.

This was a very disappointing performance consindering the importance of the match, and a vast improvement will be required if the side is to improve on its current position in the league.
