Report

Waun travelled to Brynamman for a third round Welsh cup tie which was the first game between the clubs for nine years.Due to the weather and the Wales/South Africa match, this was Waun's first game for a month.Michael Harris and Ed Bennett returned after injury and Simon King played at No.8 in place of the unavailable Simon Hart.Brynamman currently lead Division 4 South West.

This was always going to be a difficult fixture and so it proved. The home side made an excellent start to the match and had Waun under pressure early on.They missed an easy penalty and then nearly scored a try in the corner following a forward drive after a line out in the Waun 22. Waun eventually got into the game and following a break out of defence a penalty was awarded after twenty minutes whch unfortunately was missed by Jonny Lewis. A good attacking position was lost a few minutes later by a poor scrummage but a maul was then pulled down by the home side and Jonny Lewis put Waun ahead with an easy penalty after half an hour.Brynamman continued to play well and five minutes later they drew level with a penalty after Waun were penalised for offside.Worse was to follow before half time when Brynamman scored a try under the posts after some excellent handling and led at half time by ten points to three.

The start of the second half saw Waun immediately on the attack following a long kick downfield which went into touch on the home line but brought no reward.Waun were now starting to exert some contol on proceedings and the home side were not as dangerous as they were in the first half.Following a strong run by Gethin Lillicrap,Daniel Joseph forced his way over the line on the hour for an unconverted try.At the restart Waun were given a penalty following an offence by Brynamman after the try was scored.Jonny Lewis kicked it into touch in the home 22 and an excellent drive from the line out saw Ed Bennett score an unconverted try for Waun to lead 13-10. Waun were now looking a far better side tan they had been in the first half, and victory was clinched when Matthew Mason scored a converted try after some good handling.

Waun are now in the last 32 of the Welsh Cup and will be hoping for a favourable draw in the next round which will be played on January 26.
