10th November 2007: Waunarlwydd V Cwmllynfell
Played: Away
Result: Lost 24 - 6
Report
Waun travelled to Cwmllynfell hoping for a repeat of last season's remarkable fifty point victory which resulted in Waun avoiding relegation. Prior to the match the home siide were one point ahead of Waun,so a tight game was to be expected.Jonny Lewis returned at outside half in place of Simon Daniel and with David Norman unavailable Gethin Lillicrap and Paul Davies played on the wings and Matthew Watts at scrum half. Conditions were dry but became colder as the match progressed.
Waun were seven points down in the first five minutes. A tap penalty just inside the Waun half saw second row Gareth Kinsey break several tackles before good handling saw centre Paul Davies cross under the posts. With Waun struggling to put their game together a break from inside his own half by centre Ben Jones should have produced another try but the final pass went astray. Waun then started to win some possession and Jonny Lewis kicked a penalty after twenty minutes and a fine break five minutes later would have produced a try if support had been better. But five minutes later he kicked a penalty after Cwmllynfell were penalised when trying to run out of defence. There was an opportunity to take the lead before half time with a penalty but the kick drifted wide and despite further Waun pressure Waun trailed 7-6 at half time.
As in the first half Waun conceded an early try when a defensive kick failed to find touch and wing Andrew Luther beat a defender to score a converted try. Cwmllynfell were now in complete control and after missing an easy penalty after fifty minutes a further shot at goal on the hour brought the score to 17-6.The game was now out of Waun's reach and such was their dominance that Waun only reached the home 22 once in the second half.In the final move of the game a kick downfield by Cwmllynfell was not covered and full back James Pike took a pass to score under the posts.
This was a very disappointing performance which sees Waun in the bottom four and facing a very difficult December with matches against Carmarthen,Narberth and Bonymaen following a week off for the Wales/South Africa match.
