Report

With Jonny Lewis on the bench for Swansea at St.Helens,Simon Crane made his first appearance of the season at full back while Paul Davies was on the bench after recovering from injury.Up front Steffan Jones started at prop,Simon Evans returned in the second row and Paul Morris started on the bench.Waun were facing a Llangennech side who had only lost to Tonmawr and Carmarthen to date and were third in the table.

Waun made an excellent start to the match and Robbie Jones scored a converted try after ten minutes following excellent ball retention.Further pressure followed and only an interception on his own line by the Llangennech winger prevented a second try.Fortunately,he was unable to run the length of the field as he was tackled on the Waun 10 yard line.On twenty minutes,a kick ahead from a scrum caused confusion in the Llangennech defence and David Norman showed his pace to score under the posts leaving Waun fourteen points ahead. As the half continued Llangennech started to win some possession and threatened the Waun line but were kept out by excellent defence.Simon Daniel missed a penalty after 37 minutes so Waun were still fourteen points ahead at half time.

Three minutes into the second half Llangennech counter attacked from halfway after a kick failed to find touch and centre Richard Thomas scored under the posts after a fine run through the Waun defence.Llangennech's large pack were now starting to take control and two tries in three minutes around the hour by second row Chris Rees saw them lead 21-14 with twenty minutes remaining.Further pressure on the Waun line brought a short range penalty and three further points for the visitors.Waun finally spent some time on the attack but Simon Daniel missed a penalty which would have put them in line for a bonus point but the contest was ended when Llangennech scored a fourth try follwing an interception as Waun tried to launch an attack from their own half.

This was the third home defeat in four matches and very disappointing after an outstanding first thirty minutes, but credit to Llangennech for their second half display when they showed why they are highly placed in the league. Waun's next match is at Cwmllynfell next Saturday where a win is essential as the following three matches before Christmas are all against sides in the top five of the league.
